Some may think of old age as a sign of wisdom and experience. However, many times old age comes with ailing health, which can result in a person needing help with making financial and medical decisions for himself or herself. This is what seems to be happening with Casey Kasem, whom many in Maryland will remember as a legendary radio personality. Kasem is now caught in the middle of a legal battle over guardianship issues.
Kasem's wife and his two daughters have been embroiled in a legal dispute over who should be the guardian of the former radio personality who has now fallen victim to Parkinson's disease. The daughters both filed petitions in court to be granted guardianship over their father. They claim their father's wife has been preventing them from visiting their father.
However, after some negotiations, one daughter has reached a settlement agreement with the wife and has dropped her petition to obtain guardianship. The other daughter has yet to reach any agreement with the wife. She is currently considering filing a petition to remove certain restrictions over her visits with her father. The 81-year-old former radio personality is currently in the hospital.
When one finds himself or herself in the middle of a guardianship dispute in Maryland or in any other state, it is a good idea to have an understanding of the applicable laws. Knowledge of the law can be a powerful tool when negotiating with the opposing party. However, if a settlement cannot be reached, understanding the applicable laws will help when it is time to present one's legal argument in the court of law.
